RB F1 gears up for a pivotal switch: Liam Lawson might replace Daniel Ricciardo starting in Singapore, impacting the season’s dynamic.
Daniel Ricciardo May Have Already Raced His Last Formula 1 Race.
Rumors this week suggest that Red Bull is finally ready to unveil its plans for its second F1 team, RB F1 (Racing Bulls)—plans that could start as early as Singapore with Liam Lawson taking over from Ricciardo immediately.
After Baku, Dutch F1 journalist Rick Winkelman reported that, according to his sources, the story is true. The information reportedly leaked from the Verstappen camp to the Dutch media at the end of the race.
“I have understood from several people that Liam Lawson will definitely drive in Singapore.”
“Apparently, Lawson’s contract with Red Bull states that he must drive at least five Grands Prix this year.”
Red Bull’s F1 advisor, Dr. Helmut Marko, was specifically asked about RB F1’s plans, and he said in Baku: “We have an idea, but we must wait for Singapore.”
“We are still in September, but from Singapore, we will have a precise idea. We will know very clearly what will happen with the second seat.”
Marko’s reference to September is thought to be clearly linked to the clauses in the New Zealander’s F1 contract with the energy drink company.
Former Red Bull driver Robert Doornbos says he would not be at all surprised if Lawson has been guaranteed at least five Grands Prix in 2024.
“It’s very possible,” he stated, “because I had exactly the same contract with Red Bull, where they guaranteed you a certain number of races.”
“In my case, they had to fire Christian Klien (at the end of the 2006 season). Otherwise, another clause would have come into effect.”
Doornbos added that he would not be personally sad if Ricciardo’s Formula 1 adventure were indeed already over.
“He’s simply finished. Valtteri Bottas is also finished, and Guanyu Zhou is also finished. That’s how it is.”
If Lawson races just 5 Grands Prix, then Ricciardo might then do two (at the end of the season?) to make his proper goodbyes to F1. But nothing guarantees that Red Bull plans to offer him that.
