McLaren Foresees Four-Way Fight at Monza; Stella Weighs In

31/08/2024

McLaren predicts a fierce competition at Monza, while Stella discusses strategies for Piastri.

McLaren F1 does not anticipate the Italian Grand Prix to be as straightforward as the Dutch race.

Following the first day of free practice, Andrea Stella, the team director, acknowledges uncertainty about who will truly emerge at the front.

“Everyone is well-positioned among the top teams. From our perspective, we always expect Red Bull to be highly competitive. They have an efficient car and can easily generate top speed. This could be crucial in qualifying.”

“For us, it’s no different. There will be four teams contending to win the race. And with a few possible surprises, it might be that some mid-field cars join the fray at the top.”

Another major topic for McLaren F1 is deciding how to manage its two drivers. Oscar Piastri does not appear ready to sacrifice everything for Lando Norris and miss out on achieving better results, including victories.

Yet, Stella believes that the drivers’ championship is within Norris’s reach, and all efforts should be made to support him.

“I believe it because it’s mathematically possible, and we have a competitive package – the car, the team, Lando, and Oscar.”

“It’s distant but not impossible. Oscar is part of the teamwork needed to support Lando.”

“We’re having discussions with the drivers and the team, and we’ll have a similar discussion Sunday morning.”

“It’s still a step too far for Oscar to give up a strong race for Lando, especially over nine races. Lando does not want to win like that. However, if it makes sense in certain situations, we will certainly help him.”
