Monza Evolution: Ferrari’s Hope to End Porpoising

29/08/2024

As Ferrari heads to Italy, Carlos Sainz is optimistic the Monza evolution will finally resolve their porpoising woes.

Ferrari continues to face issues with porpoising and bouncing, despite the updates introduced in Hungary intended to address this problem. This weekend, the Scuderia will debut a new upgrade package, and Carlos Sainz hopes it will eliminate this issue in the car’s behavior.

“I feel we are a bit behind in understanding this phenomenon,” the Spaniard stated. “I hope that with this new floor or the new improvements we are bringing, these issues will disappear and we can focus on increasing the car’s downforce.”

Sainz acknowledges that Lando Norris’s commanding victory at Zandvoort is concerning for Ferrari, although the Italian team has closed the gap with Red Bull and Mercedes during this round. He is particularly surprised by Norris’s form after managing to compete against Oscar Piastri.

“It’s depressing for everyone, not just for Ferrari. I think at least we are not behind Red Bull… and Red Bull and Mercedes. We managed to overtake a Red Bull and even caught up with a McLaren during the race. Lando must have had a really solid weekend.”

“Oscar was fourth, so it’s not like the McLaren was in a different league, I think Lando must have had a very solid weekend. With a dramatic turnaround from Saturday to Sunday, perhaps our improvements will be the answer to continue progressing at Monza.”

The Italian Grand Prix will be Sainz’s last for Ferrari on Scuderia’s home turf before his move to Williams next year.

Sainz expects better for the Italian team but remains cautious about his chances of victory.

“The track has been resurfaced, so we will find a very different Monza than in recent years. We must wait for the Free Practices and see, but I hope Monza will be one of those weekends where we can place both cars on the podium or in the top 5, and we will see if we can fight for the victory or not.”
