Possible Ferrari Comeback for Sainz

Sainz Hints at Future Ferrari Return

28/08/2024

Carlos Sainz suggests a future return to Ferrari might be on the cards, backed by strong results and relationships.

Carlos Sainz stated that a return to Ferrari could be possible one day.

The Spaniard is set to leave the legendary Italian team after the 2024 season finale in Abu Dhabi to make way for seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.

Team boss Frédéric Vasseur continues to insist that Sainz did nothing wrong.

“Calling Carlos to tell him he would not be retained was the most difficult moment of his career at Ferrari so far.”

“Almost everything,” added Vasseur, when asked what he would miss about Sainz. “A team player, consistent, offering valuable advice.”

“I will never forget that it was he who took me to the top step of the podium for the first time, nor his fundamental contribution to last year’s comeback. And his determination has helped Charles (Leclerc) grow.”

Nevertheless, Sainz’s best option for 2025 and beyond was to join Williams.

“Of course, I explored all the options available to me. Obviously, at one point, it seemed that I still had a chance with Mercedes or Red Bull.”

“So I gave it time to see how these situations unfolded, it led nowhere. And when the options I had on the table were presented to me, Williams was the one that convinced me the most.”

“I see a team that has developed well over the past two years. With very clear leadership, a very clear goal, a very clear vision, a lot of investment in the project, which is obviously fundamental today, I think.”

And I’ve always had a very strong connection, a very good relationship with James and the investment group that is now at Williams. Listen, it motivates me. It’s a team that I think I can help move forward in the future. It’s a motivation for me as a driver to go there to a team as historic as I perhaps did with McLaren and try to help them move forward.”

The good news for Sainz is that his relationship with Ferrari appears to be completely intact.

“Perhaps the hardest thing to explain is that everything worked for me at Ferrari. It’s just that a seven-time world champion decided that the last part of his sporting career would be at Ferrari, and in that sense, I was somewhat of a sacrifice.”

“I remember… I was in the middle of negotiations with Ferrari. Everything seemed to be going in the right direction and then suddenly, this news came to me and it was completely unexpected. A huge change in the way my career was suddenly going to unfold and I had to make the decision to negotiate, to talk to all these teams for which I could potentially apply.”

“But I leave Ferrari with good results, with a good relationship with Fred and Charles. I think we formed a good team together, we had wins and podiums, a good relationship with all the engineers, with the tifosi.”

“So you can never close the door on a team like Ferrari, keeping in mind that I still have five or ten years of racing left.”

“That’s why I think it’s important for me to enjoy these last races without any other worries on my mind, because you never know what might happen next in life. Having been a Ferrari driver and to be one for nine more races is something I will enjoy to the fullest and make the most of.”
