Ferrari’s Vasseur targets to enthuse the tifosi at the thrilling Monza GP, presenting a unique challenge.
Ferrari competes this weekend in the most significant race of its season at Monza, as it hosts the Italian Grand Prix. The team will sport a special livery not yet seen, but it is already known that the suits will be red, with a checkered logo reminiscent of carbon.
Frédéric Vasseur, the director of the Scuderia, anticipates a challenge with the discovery of resurfacing, and also expects a fervent embrace from the tens of thousands of tifosi.
“We arrive at Monza in good spirits, following our performance at the Zandvoort race. It was a demonstration of how, in current Formula 1, flawless execution, by putting everything together and maximizing the available set, can truly make a difference,” stated Vasseur.
“Monza is unique in many ways: the track is truly one-of-a-kind, it’s the only high-speed circuit remaining on the calendar, and this year, it will pose an additional challenge as it has been completely redone, with changes made to the curbs in some turns.”
“But what really makes it special for us is that we know we can count on the support of the tens of thousands of tifosi who will cheer us on throughout the race and who, rightfully, expect great results from us.”
The Frenchman explains how unique this experience is: “I will never forget my first Italian Grand Prix with Ferrari last year, the cheers when Carlos took pole position on Saturday, then the celebrations under the podium on Sunday.”
“The goal for me, the drivers, and everyone at the Scuderia – the team at the track and the hundreds of people working in Maranello – is to once again give the tifosi a reason to rejoice.”
“With this in mind, our preparation has been meticulous and we will bring updates to the SF-24 that, we hope, will allow us to take another step forward in terms of performance. We know we can rely on the support of all our tifosi and we will put our hearts into it.”
Giovinazzi Discusses Ferrari’s “Pride” at Monza
Antonio Giovinazzi, the team’s reserve driver and a local, will be in the USA for the WEC this weekend, but he is very familiar with Monza and its tifosi: “Ferrari’s home race is always special and this year it will be even more interesting because the track has undergone several modifications.”
“The asphalt has been completely redone, the radii of some turns have been modified, and the curbs have been changed, so there are a lot of new things. What does not change is the unique feeling that Monza gives, with its long straights, heavy braking points, the thrill of the chicanes, and high-speed turns…”
“It is estimated that the Ascari turn will be even faster than before, so I expect the Italian weekend to be a great challenge for everyone. And obviously, as far as we are concerned, we will do everything possible in front of all the tifosi, who expect something good from Ferrari.”
The Italian driver details the technical difficulties and setup challenges of the Lombardy track: “Mastering aerodynamic downforce is crucial. Monza is a high-speed circuit, so a low-downforce car is needed for maximum efficiency on the long straights.”
“Consequently, braking at Monza with a very light car is very different from what drivers have just experienced at Zandvoort, which is a circuit where a lot of aerodynamic downforce is used. This means that the main challenge at Monza will be to have a level of downforce that offers the best possible traction and corner exit.”
Giovinazzi has raced at Monza in F1 and WEC, and each time he has been struck by the support and love from the audience. He explains that racing under Ferrari’s colors, as he has done in WEC, is an incredible feeling.
“The answer is one word: pride, because as an Italian, you really feel the support of the tifosi, from Thursday, when you arrive at the circuit, until Sunday evening. All this affection pushes you to give your best and it’s as if the fans help you find that last tenth.”
“From the cockpit, you see all that red in the stands and you feel that you must perform well, for the team, for yourself, but especially for all those who have come to watch the race and express their love and passion for Ferrari.”
