Following a disappointing performance, Mercedes F1 sets sights on a strong rebound at Monza, focusing on the challenges posed by recent track changes.
Mercedes F1 arrives at Monza following a particularly troubling setback in the Netherlands.
After clinching three Grand Prix victories this summer, they had hoped to propel their W15 back among the leading teams. However, during the last race, the pace was lacking, both in qualifying and in the race.
Toto Wolff, the director, reflects on this race and looks ahead to Monza, likely with good news to announce for Andrea Kimi Antonelli: a starting position for 2025.
“It was a disappointing weekend at Zandvoort. We did not perform at the level we expected,” comments the Austrian.
“Lewis had a strong race to make it back into the points, but his qualifying outside our usual position limited his comeback. George suffered from significant degradation and thus lacked the pace to fight for the top 6.”
“The team is already working hard to analyze all the data to understand what caused this issue. Although the turnaround is rapid, we have the chance to bounce back immediately at Monza. I am confident that we can do it.”
“It’s a very different circuit from Zandvoort, and probably even faster this year due to some of the changes made. We will also need to understand the impact of the track resurfacing that has been done. Monza is always a fascinating challenge for the teams and drivers, and we look forward to it.”
Mercedes F1 will thus have an Italian in Free Practice 1 to please the tifosi.
“The atmosphere is always special because the Italian fans are passionate about racing. It will be even more so during FP1 when Kimi Antonelli gets in George’s car for a session dedicated to our young driver. Kimi has been part of our junior program since he was 12, so it’s a significant moment for him and for the team.”
“I am sure he will relish the experience of driving in front of his home crowd, and I am sure they will be thrilled to see a new Italian talent on track. We are eager to see Kimi behind the wheel of the W15 on Friday morning and contribute to the team’s start to the weekend.”
