In a pivotal move, Franco Colapinto replaces Logan Sargeant at Williams F1, following a decisive crash at Zandvoort.
Following Logan Sargeant’s embarrassing crash at Zandvoort on Saturday, the American has lost his seat at Williams F1 and will not finish the season with the Grove-based team. While many expected Mick Schumacher to take over, it is Williams Academy junior Franco Colapinto who will replace him starting this weekend at Monza.
Sargeant has had numerous accidents over the past year and a half, and coupled with his lack of performance, the costs were mounting for Williams. The car he crashed in the Netherlands on Saturday was also equipped with a full package of upgrades.
Colapinto, who is competing in F2 this year with MP Motorsport, has claimed one victory and earned the confidence of James Vowles. Racing with number 43, he now has nine races to showcase his talent, even though the team’s seats are already filled by Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz for 2025.
The team has confirmed that Colapinto will remain for the rest of the season alongside Albon, and the first Argentine to race in the world championship since Gaston Mazzacane did not hide his excitement.
“It is an honor to make my Formula 1 debut with Williams,” declared Colapinto. “The team has a remarkable history and a mission to return to the forefront, which I am eager to be part of.”
“Arriving in F1 mid-season will require a huge learning curve, but I am ready to take on the challenge and am fully focused on working as hard as possible with Alex and the team to make it a success.”
“A Better Chance to Fight for Points”
James Vowles, the director of Williams, long sought to avoid this decision by retaining Sargeant until the end. He seemed angrier on Saturday following the crash and explained his decision.
“Replacing a driver mid-season is not a decision we have taken lightly, but we believe it gives Williams the best chance to fight for points until the end of the season,” stated Vowles.
“We have just made a significant upgrade to the car, and we need to maximize every opportunity to score points in an exceptionally tight midfield battle.”
“We also believe in investing in our young drivers within the Williams Racing Driver Academy, and Franco has a fantastic opportunity to show what he is capable of over the last nine races of the season.”
The British director is aware that this decision will be hard for Sargeant to accept: “It’s undoubtedly very difficult for Logan, who has given his all throughout his career at Williams, and we want to thank him for his hard work and positive attitude.”
“Logan remains a talented driver, and we will support him as he continues his driving career. I know Franco has great speed and huge potential, and we are eager to see what he can do in Formula 1.”
