McLaren Closes Gap on Red Bull, Drivers' Duel

Wolff Declares Open Race for Constructors’ Title

27/08/2024

Wolff claims the constructors’ race is open as McLaren gains on Red Bull, stirring the drivers’ championship debate.

Toto Wolff, Mercedes F1 Team Principal, questions whether Lando Norris can challenge Max Verstappen for this year’s drivers’ championship. However, the Austrian recognizes that the competition is open in the team standings.

“I think McLaren has demonstrated in the past that since they made improvements to the car in Austria last year, they have been spot on, and it was very impressive to see during the race,” Wolff stated.

“Lando almost obliterated the competition with his fastest lap at the end, on 42 laps of hard tires and a 20-second gap. So, I think this championship, the constructors’ championship, is very open, in my opinion, and that’s a good thing for Formula 1.”

Wolff also wonders if Mercedes can influence this battle: “But, in the drivers’ championship, I think Max, to a certain extent, still controls the situation. However, it will be exciting to see if there is a shift in power and to what extent we can be a part of it.”

“Because we were able to compete in the last few races, and I think if we had had a fairly normal car at Zandvoort, where would we have ended up? I don’t think we would have beaten Norris, but we might have had a somewhat more exciting position.”
