Vettel voices support for Mick Schumacher replacing Logan Sargeant, citing deserved opportunity.
Four-time F1 World Champion Sebastian Vettel has jumped into the rumors stating that Logan Sargeant is on the brink of losing his seat for Monza, or at the latest, Singapore.
Following another significant crash in the Free Practice at Zandvoort, James Vowles, the Williams F1 team principal, initiated several discussions with Toto Wolff, the Mercedes F1 team principal, regarding the possible availability of Mick Schumacher.
A loan of Liam Lawson by Red Bull is also possible, but Christian Horner emphasized that he must return should any of the four drivers (Red Bull Racing and RB F1) become unavailable, which is not in Vowles’ interest.
For Vettel, Schumacher needs his chance.
“If it were my decision, I would tend to favor Mick. Of course, I am somewhat biased since he’s my friend, but in my view, he’s the best solution. Mick has two years of experience in Formula 1 as a driver, he has extensive technical knowledge thanks to his current role as Mercedes’ reserve driver.”
“He knows the Mercedes engine and has matured significantly as a person since leaving Haas F1.”
Vettel highlighted that Schumacher’s knowledge of the remaining circuits in the calendar (except Las Vegas) should place him as a favorite.
“Mick is a capable racing driver. He has won both Formula 2 and Formula 3, which is no small feat.”
“Now, he has matured even further. I’m sure he could make a strong impression at Williams. Especially since, unlike other candidates, he is familiar with Formula 1 drivers and circuits. That’s a significant advantage.”
“I hope he gets his chance and can show the world what he is capable of. Mick was unfairly stigmatized because of his two years at Haas.”
“Sure, he made mistakes, but the car was not competitive. Many people have a skewed perception of him.”
