Horner Vows to Match Standards to Retain Verstappen

26/08/2024

Horner commits to high standards at Red Bull, aiming to secure Verstappen’s future against Wolff’s overtures.

Red Bull boss Christian Horner criticized Mercedes F1 for their poor performance at the Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix, while Toto Wolff continues to publicly court Max Verstappen.

Wolff has openly expressed his desire to bring Verstappen to Mercedes, which took a new turn this weekend when he revealed that discussions had taken place with his management this summer.

Verstappen is under contract with Red Bull until 2028, but his place in the team is the subject of speculation due to tensions since the pre-season.

The Dutchman admitted he has good relations with Wolff and denied that the Austrian needs to stop his ongoing comments in the media.

“I find the number of discussions on this topic in the media surprising,” Horner stated.

“The situation has always been clear between us and Max, and I think others can talk about it, but we are comfortable with the current situation.”

However, Horner reiterated that he is not worried about Verstappen leaving the team, despite Wolff’s claims that Mercedes’ path would cross with the Dutchman one day. But not before 2026.

Asked if he feared that Red Bull’s difficult situation might impact Verstappen’s future, Horner replied, “Well, it’s up to us to keep our promises. We have a deal until 2028.”

“So, it’s up to us to rise to the occasion. Besides, I didn’t see Toto’s car performing that well this Sunday.”

The British manager suggested that the long-term contract of the three-time world champion includes exit clauses tied to Red Bull’s competitiveness on the track.

“Listen, 2028 is a long way off. It’s up to us to deliver a winning car. Will we be there in 2028? You know, the 2026 regulations are already coming up. And even 2025 could be a challenge…”

“Every contract has a performance element. But we’re not going to discuss these elements in public. As long as we provide Max with a competitive car, we know what the situation is.”
