Jonathan Wheatley to Become Audi F1 Director After 18 Years at Red Bull, Joining the ‘Piranha Club’

Jonathan Wheatley is set to become the director of Audi F1 following an 18-year tenure at Red Bull, joining what his peers dub the “Piranha Club.”

James Vowles, who has been at the helm of Williams F1 since early 2023, lauded Wheatley’s achievements at Zandvoort. “First and foremost, congratulations to him. I know this is something he wanted, and he has done a brilliant job at Red Bull. He has contributed significantly to the company’s success,” said Vowles.

“If you look at the areas he’s responsible for, namely the operation of the race car on the track, the race team, and the pit stops, you can see the diligence he demonstrates in these areas.”

“They are leaders in their category, and it’s not by chance. It’s the result of hard work and great diligence. As for the background of the candidates, I have said it before.”

“Leadership skills are the important elements that emerge from this. We all have different skills around the table. I think, as you pointed out here, there is certainly an engineering background.”

“But there are far better engineers than me within an organization. That’s not what I bring. I bring a good understanding of how to manage a business, but not the expertise of some of the other team directors.”

“But it’s communication and leadership that really stand out. And in this regard, I can only judge by what he has done at Red Bull. I think he has a good working foundation, and I wish him the best in this regard.”

Ayao Komatsu, who has been in his position since the beginning of 2024, is already familiar with Wheatley’s past work: “Yes, I don’t know him very well, but of course, I was at Enstone, and then Jonathan was there before me at Enstone.”

“So I have indirectly heard from people who worked for him how good he was. And then, as James said, what he has achieved at Red Bull is incredible. So, yes, I am really pleased he has this opportunity. I’m sure he will do a great job.”
