Alonso: A Privilege to Witness Newey’s Potential Move to Aston Martin F1

23/08/2024

Alonso praises Newey’s rumoured Aston Martin move but remains wary of unconfirmed reports.

Fernando Alonso has cautioned fans and the media about the rumours linking Adrian Newey to the Aston Martin F1 team.

After 19 years with Red Bull, the sought-after technical consultant is exiting the team, with his signature in high demand from several teams including Ferrari, Alpine, Williams, and Aston Martin.

Aston Martin F1 has reportedly made a substantial offer to Newey as it seeks a marquee signing to bolster its technical ranks following the recruitment of Dan Fallows from Red Bull and Enrico Cardile from Ferrari.

Alonso, who has never worked with Newey during his more than two decades in F1, emphasises that it is a “privilege” to have Newey potentially linked to his team, but…

“It’s the same situation as in Monaco when I woke up one day and by noon, there was a press conference announcing I was joining Ferrari,” Alonso said when asked for his thoughts on the rumours more strongly connecting Newey to Aston Martin than to other teams.

“We have so many issues to address, we need to enhance the car’s performance so we cannot allow ourselves to be distracted by everyone’s transfers every weekend.”

“For me, it’s a privilege that Aston Martin is linked to Adrian Newey – just reading about this association is a privilege and I feel honoured to be part of Aston Martin.”

“If one day it happens, I’ll be happy, but I can’t dream or keep thinking about things that aren’t present.”

“There are ideas and evidence of what we’ve done well and what we might not have understood initially.”

“I am convinced that we have the necessary talent within the team. We have the motivation, we now have the new factory. We also have new people coming in.”

“Unfortunately, this is Formula 1, we can’t change things overnight, but we won’t stop working until we are in a competitive position.”
