Norris Admits: ‘Too Many Errors’ to Vie for F1 Crown

22/08/2024

Norris concedes his errors have dashed his F1 title hopes.

Lando Norris is frustrated with his own performances as he battles for victories and potentially a world championship following McLaren F1’s resurgence to the front of the grid. The British driver believes he has made too many mistakes to legitimately claim the world championship title.

“I’m fighting for the championship, so I won’t be happy if I’m not performing at the level needed to beat Max, Red Bull, and the other drivers I need to defeat,” Norris stated. “I think it’s always the same, I’m always very happy with how the season has gone.”

“However, I’ve made too many errors and lost too many points, which isn’t the level I need if I want to contend for the championship at the end of the day and compete against a driver like Max. So, there are a lot of things I’ve looked at and had to work on, and I’ve become much stronger.”

He believes that the moments where he lost points can be attributed to several issues: “It’s a mix of things, but it starts right from the first lap. Again, there’s not just one thing I need to change, honestly.”

“But that’s where most of my opportunities have slipped away. After the first lap, the races have generally been very strong, and the pace has remained very good. The race pace has been good, the strategy was very sound.”

“There are still many strengths, but they are always overshadowed by a poor start or a bad turn, or by being a bit cautious at times, trying to stay out of trouble, things like that. So, it’s not huge, but these are also not simple things that one can guarantee perfect change on.”

Oscar Piastri is back in form and was questioned about his rib injury, which was revealed during the summer break. He acknowledges experiencing some challenging weeks after sustaining the injury while driving.

“Everything has returned to normal, but at one point, in Austria, after driving, it was painful. Everything is fine now, but it was a challenge for a while,” the Australian driver stated.

“It was due to the seat. Before the start of the season, you design your seat, and sometimes you don’t get it perfectly right. This creates a pressure point, and my rib eventually gave way,” he added before reviewing the team hierarchy.

“The last few months have been solid, we are widening the gap to Red Bull, and our aim is to win the constructors’ championship. Mercedes have been very strong, the fastest at Silverstone, and even at Spa. It will be tight between us, Mercedes, and Red Bull. Ferrari doesn’t have much to find to rejoin the fight.”
