Kevin Magnussen, reflecting on his Formula 1 career, admits that while he secured a pole and podium, his ambitions in the sport were set much higher.
As his Formula 1 career appears to be drawing to a close, Kevin Magnussen has reflected on his major achievements. The Haas F1 driver expressed satisfaction with his accomplishments in the premier class, despite originally setting his sights much higher.
“Accessing Formula 1 itself is quite difficult and it’s a challenging thing to achieve,” Magnussen remarked. “As a child, I dreamt of winning championships, races, and securing pole positions, but that wasn’t to be.”
“There has been a pole position, a podium, but these were not my ambition. Therefore, I am pleased with the progress I’ve made from my early days in motor racing to now, after 10 years in Formula 1.”
“The goal is to win, there’s no hiding it, so why should I sit here and say ‘oh no, I’m happy with what I’ve achieved.’ It’s not like that, it’s not true. Things can be viewed from different angles.”
The Dane detailed what he has managed to achieve over his years of experience in the top category: “Each year, you become more seasoned, more resilient, and more robust. I feel I am improving increasingly with experience; nothing really throws you off anymore.”
“When I was a rookie, I was very different mentally from what I am now, and that’s solely because of the experience. So, I think I’ve reached my peak, and next year, I will continue to improve.”
Regarding his return to F1 in early 2022 with Haas after a year’s absence, Magnussen affirmed his decision despite some challenges: “Honestly, I have no regrets. It was fun and exciting to try something so unexpected.”
“It was an intense journey because I had really closed that chapter, completely, mentally; I had a child and fully started the next phase of my life with my wife and family. Then, boom, I was back, and all this experience was very exciting for me and my family.”
Magnussen made no illusions about his return to the sport and to the Haas team: “That’s what you should expect when you arrive in Formula 1. I was already an experienced Formula 1 driver when I returned; I knew what to expect.”
“Nothing was really a surprise, so I knew. I knew there would be hurdles, and I also knew it wasn’t going to be smooth, and I knew there would be a honeymoon phase and then there would be… but all that, I had considered. It’s part of the process.”
