FIA Pressed by Ocon to Keep Strict 2026 Aero Limits

Ocon Urges FIA to Maintain 2026 Aero Rules Tightness

19/08/2024

Ocon advocates for the FIA to uphold strict aerodynamic regulations for 2026 to ensure competitive parity in F1 racing.

Esteban Ocon hopes the FIA will resist team demands to ease the aerodynamic restrictions that Formula 1 and the federation plan to introduce. According to the future Haas F1 driver, it is crucial to limit development and focus on exploiting the cars to narrow the gaps.

“I disagree with the fact that we see different winners,” notes Ocon. “Yes, McLaren, Red Bull, Mercedes, Ferrari, they are the same as they have long been, even before. McLaren has joined them, so one team has essentially succeeded under this regulatory change.”

“There is a manufacturers’ championship, and there is always the question of which team is the best. But all cars should be within three or four tenths of each other. I find that the new rules are very restrictive on many aerodynamic aspects, and I see that teams are pressing to open them up more.”

“I hope, therefore, that the FIA will be very strict on this point and will say ‘no, we are not opening the doors any further’. Because if we keep these restrictions, it will then be up to the team that does the best job over the weekend, rather than on the overall development of the car.”

“What do we like as fans? We like struggles, we like wheel-to-wheel combat, we like fights for the lead until the end of the race. We care much less about who has the best development throughout the season, it’s not very cool to watch on TV on Sunday.”

The Frenchman insists that the aerodynamic regulation must be restrictive to produce a spectacle: “As a fan of this sport and as a driver, what I want to see are ten cars capable of winning a weekend. As it was in Formula 3, as it was sometimes in DTM.”

“I hope there will be a small difference between the engines in 2026. But from an aerodynamic point of view, the situation will be quite stable. Not like Formula E, but almost, that’s what I wish. The power unit has far less impact than one might think.”

“It’s a performance factor, very important, but it’s nothing compared to aerodynamic development and everything else. It represents only 10% of the whole. That’s what I’m saying: the engine is fine, but the rest must be limited!”
