Vasseur stands by Leclerc, highlighting the unusually high expectations placed on the Ferrari driver.
Ferrari has resolved to continue with Charles Leclerc into 2025, opting not to extend Carlos Sainz’s contract.
However, following his victory at Monaco, a series of less convincing performances cast doubt on this decision. While the Spaniard demonstrated consistency and capitalised on the potential of his SF-24, the Monegasque faced a challenging string of races.
This naturally elicited criticism, both from Sainz’s supporters on social media and in the press. Questions arose over Ferrari’s choice of pairing him with Lewis Hamilton for the future.
Yet, in Hungary and Belgium, Leclerc silenced his critics. But does this reassure Frédéric Vasseur, his team principal?
“It wasn’t just about Charles; it was also a challenging period for the team,” he told the official F1 website.
“After Monaco, we hit a difficult patch. In Canada, we weren’t poorly positioned. What’s clear is that the car has been somewhat trickier to handle over the last two races and that the expectations placed on Charles are also a bit higher.”
“It’s the life of a team; there are ups and downs. We have ongoing discussions with Charles. He understands our position, what we are doing right and our mistakes, and he knows that sometimes he has erred. But we’re not in a position where we’re looking to pin blame on anyone.”
“We’ve been working together for years; we know each other well, we know we are fighting, and we just need to sort things out. We are definitely not in a position to point fingers at anyone. It’s also in these situations that having a personal relationship is beneficial.”
As for Sainz, Vasseur has been impressed by how he’s handled his impending departure and highlights the Spaniard’s ability to compete with Leclerc as key to contending for this year’s constructors’ championship.
“One of Carlos’s strengths is his mental fortitude; he is incredibly consistent. I’ve seen only two challenging races for him in the last 36 since I’ve been here. He is extremely steady, always there. He is very dedicated, focused, and has a solid understanding of the car.”
