Brown’s Key Changes Propel McLaren to F1 Victory

15/08/2024

Zak Brown’s strategic changes and team innovation have elevated McLaren F1, showcasing their prowess with the new models.

Zak Brown firmly believes that McLaren F1’s success this season is attributable to Andrea Stella’s leadership. The team’s CEO highlighted that the structural changes involved only a handful of personnel, crediting the way Stella managed the team as transformative.

“He unlocked the talent we already had here,” Brown said, recalling that the same team had previously designed inferior cars. “We have about 1,000 people in F1. I changed three of them. But they were three leaders. So, 997 people are the same ones who delivered the car at the start of 2023.”

“The job of a leader is to maximize the potential of their team, and that’s what we were missing before. We couldn’t let the talent we have here flourish.”

“Andrea communicates very well. He listens very well. He’s very hardworking. He’s very technical. He leads by example. He embodies all the qualities one expects of a great leader. He has unlocked the potential that this team clearly had within it.”

McLaren was in dire straits in 2016

Zak Brown joined McLaren in 2016 as Executive Director, and he recalls the dire state of the team: “It was worse than I thought. We were ninth in the championship. We had blank racing cars, three sponsors, I believe.”

“We had disgruntled fans, disgruntled drivers, and a race team in rather poor shape. It was quite frightening. The team needed resources as we were losing a lot of money, to be able to invest in drivers, technology, and personnel.”

The team then underwent a restructuring over several years, involving sponsor signings, driver recruitments, and the rebranding of McLaren’s image in F1. Brown admits that things started to “stall” in 2022, prompting him to make leadership changes at the top of the team.

“We put Andrea in charge of the team. He did some reorganization – more than a little – he did a great job, rallied the team, and we’ve been on fire since. But we are bound to encounter obstacles along the way.”
