Verstappen Opt for Setups That Don’t Suit Teammates

Verstappen opts for car setups that challenge his Red Bull teammates, shedding light on his unique approach.

Max Verstappen has revealed why the Red Bull RB20 does not suit Sergio Pérez as well as it does him. The three-time F1 World Champion explained that he prefers a responsive and balanced front end, but that sometimes compromises are necessary, and those his teammate must make are certainly worse.

“From my point of view, I like to have a good front end,” Verstappen told Formula HU. “I like the car to turn quickly and strongly. But of course, everything must be balanced. You can’t give everything to the front and expect the rear to follow, so you must try to find a middle ground, and it’s not the same for everyone.”

Alex Albon, who spent a year and a half alongside Verstappen at Red Bull, explained last year that driving the Milton Keynes-based single-seater was like playing a game with sensitivity settings turned up to the maximum.

Verstappen explained that this is not necessarily a setting that prevents speed: “Everyone has their own driving style, so what works for me might not work for another driver, but another driver might drive a bit differently and he can be fast too.”

“So, from my side, everything feels very natural in the way my car handles because that’s what I like about the car. But maybe for someone else, it’s not what they prefer. That’s just the way it is.”
