Leclerc on Team Dynamics: Openness with Vasseur, Sainz

13/08/2024

Leclerc reveals his straightforward rapport with Ferrari colleagues, highlighting efficiency in communication.

Charles Leclerc remains content at Ferrari, despite the results not yet aligning with his ambitions: more victories and a genuine contest for the world title that continues to elude him.

To achieve this, like the tifosi, he places his hopes in one man: Frédéric Vasseur.

The Monegasque praised his rapport with the Frenchman during an interview with RTBF.

“With Fred, it’s good because we don’t need many words to understand each other. We’ve known each other for such a long time. We are very direct; we don’t waste time when there’s something to be said.”

“I think it’s positive. We work extremely well together. We are in a situation that is not easy for the team; we are not pleased with the situation. We are doing absolutely everything to try and return to the top.”

This year, however, he must also deal with a teammate, Carlos Sainz, who appears to have reached a new level in terms of performance and, more importantly, consistency. The two drivers must therefore get along as best they can and sometimes adhere to certain team orders. And there are times when there’s still a bit of static on the line…

“It’s not easy to find a balance. We’ve all worked hard to get to where we are. We’re living a dream, and we all want to show what we’re capable of. It’s natural that there are sometimes frictions.”

“There will always be races where things heat up a bit more between teammates. I think McLaren handled it well in Hungary. I flew with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri to Spa, and everything was fine. It was the same with Carlos Sainz and me in the past. We didn’t always agree on the track and we discussed it afterwards. It’s also very candid and direct.”

“We don’t always manage it in the best way with adrenaline. Sometimes, when you hear communications over the radio, you might think it’s much hotter than it really is!”

The Belgian broadcaster also discussed with Leclerc his ability to be quick in qualifications.

“Am I the fastest driver on a single lap? I don’t know if you can say that, but you have to believe it 200% once I put my helmet on. You need confidence when you’re in an F1 car.”

“I do think that qualifying is one of my strengths. It’s sometimes been a problem because I don’t tell myself I’ll drive at 95%. I’m more likely to say I’ll give 105% and see if it works. Sometimes it doesn’t, and it hurts. I believe my mentality has paid off more often than not. So that will remain my mentality for the rest of my career.”
