Hülkenberg trusts engineers to spot and exploit potential weaknesses in the upcoming 2026 F1 regulations.
Nico Hülkenberg believes engineers will identify loopholes and grey areas in the forthcoming regulations. The Haas F1 driver, set to join Audi in 2026, is convinced that the FIA will not be able to prevent regulatory circumventions, despite overall success in 2022.
“It’s clear that teams are heavily investing in infrastructure and personnel to make a difference in one way or another,” stated Hülkenberg. “They are pushing in this direction and if the FIA levels the playing field, there’s not much that can be done as it’s obviously difficult and in some ways contradictory.”
“I think engineers always find a way. There is so much creativity, and over time, they work the rules and will find a loophole and an area where they can gain an advantage over someone and optimize it.”
“This is something over which I have no impact, no power, no say. But I trust the process. I trust that the FIA and F1 will do what’s necessary.”
The German also appreciates that the future engines will be hybrid: “It’s a hybrid, but it’s still 50/50. So we still have 50% combustion engine. I think with the way the world has changed over the last five years or decades, it was inevitable for F1.”
“They had to do the same thing, stay current, justify themselves, you know, with climate change and these issues. I think it was also necessary to move in this direction. And 50/50, I think it’s a healthy split, leaving the door open for e-fuels and such in the future.”
