With Binotto’s arrival, Zhou sees a fresh start in his bid to secure a Stake F1 seat for 2025.
Guanyu Zhou expects to start negotiations from scratch with Stake F1 and Audi for his contract extension. The Chinese driver understands that his current team is his only chance to remain in Formula 1 next year, and Mattia Binotto’s arrival shifts the dynamics for him.
“I think with what they are aiming for in terms of goals and future for next year, and also with the arrival of the Audi factory team, it’s going to be a bit different,” Zhou stated. “I have no updates, as Mattia will really join the team only next week.”
“For me, it is a reset for the management group, to try and speak differently and to truly understand the value you can bring and what they want you to have.”
“Things will definitely change a bit more than previously anticipated, but as far as I’m concerned, I don’t think it has changed much of the overall story or the future.”
Zhou notes that he is well acquainted with Mattia Binotto, having been part of the Ferrari Driver Academy for several years when the Swiss became the director of Ferrari, which will avoid a potentially time-consuming discovery phase.
“I’ve known him for a few years now, back when he was at Ferrari. So, he’s not someone I’ve never spoken to. He’s not entirely new to me, and I don’t need to introduce myself frequently. I think he already knows me, and we know him as well.”
