Williams considers launching Antonelli’s F1 career this season if Sargeant fails to meet expectations.
James Vowles does not rule out a driver change at Williams F1 before the end of the 2024 season.
The team boss confirmed this week that Carlos Sainz has finally signed a contract to join Williams for 2025 and beyond.
Sainz replaces the struggling American driver Logan Sargeant.
“I want to thank Logan for everything he has done for the team, and I know he will continue to fight for us in the upcoming races,” Vowles stated in a press release.
However, Vowles does not dismiss a scenario in which Sargeant might actually lose his seat after the summer break.
“Logan needs to earn his place on this team, but that goes for everyone – just like Alex Albon and just like myself. I certainly do not mean to say he has an assured place at Williams.”
Sargeant has not managed to score a single point so far in 2024, adding pressure on Williams’s budget due to damage from crashes.
Meanwhile, Vowles remains close to his former boss, Toto Wolff, and the two may consider giving Kimi Antonelli some racing experience at Williams this year before the 17-year-old’s full-time debut at Mercedes in 2025.
“It’s not as if Toto is imposing this on us, no,” said Vowles, whose team based in Grove is powered by Mercedes engines.
“To be honest, I would prefer to give Logan a chance to succeed. But if we can make the car faster, and we will, then I have the responsibility to ensure we finish as high as possible in the championship.”
“If Logan can measure up at this stage, that’s great. If not, then I need to rethink my options.”
