RB F1’s recent performance at Spa signals a promising outlook, as Mekies affirms positive strides.
RB F1 wrapped up the first half of the season by scoring a point thanks to Daniel Ricciardo. Laurent Mekies, the director of the Italian team, praised the Australian’s performance, as well as that of Yuki Tsunoda, who started at the back of the grid at the Belgian Grand Prix due to a penalty for changing mechanical parts on his VCARB 01.
“Overall, Daniel, Yuki, and the entire team delivered a very strong performance this weekend, with another race in the points thanks to George’s last-minute penalty,” stated the Frenchman.
“We were 14th with Daniel after the first lap, and we climbed to 10th place, having lost the ninth spot just a few laps from the end. It was once again a very tough fight in the midfield, and on a fast track like Spa, we were back in the fray, which is a good sign for the rest of the season.”
“As for Yuki, we knew before this race that our work plan would be different from usual, with Yuki having to start from the back due to his power unit change. It was nearly impossible to come back into the points from there, and it’s fair to say that we never really managed to have a car that suited him this weekend.”
“A very solid first half of the season”
Asked to reflect on the first part of what is the team’s inaugural Visa CashApp RB F1 season, Mekies is content: “From day one, our aim has been to race as credible contenders at the top of the field and this summer break is the logical time to assess where we stand.”
“We’ve had a very solid first half of the season during which we’ve built our performance race by race, scoring points in 10 out of 14 races. We are fighting hard for that 6th place among the constructors, against very strong competitors, and it will be a tough battle up to Abu Dhabi.”
“Our teams in Faenza and Bicester are strengthening every day. We now have a few days of work before and after the summer break, before tackling the last 10 races across multiple time zones, all in pairs or triples. We won’t have a standalone race until Miami in May 2025!”
“This is proof of Formula 1’s immense global popularity, and we are pleased to be a part of it. It’s certainly a challenging schedule, particularly for the mechanics, so the break is well-deserved after everyone has worked so hard to get our new entity RB F1 off to such a positive start.”
