Vowles backs Sargeant for the full season while Antonelli’s 2024 Williams F1 move remains uncertain.
James Vowles reaffirmed at Spa that Williams F1, under his direction, will not be giving Andrea Kimi Antonelli a chance at this time. The British team principal is keen to keep Logan Sargeant until the end of the season, although he acknowledges that the American needs to continue proving his worth.
“I think what I’ve already said is that one must earn their place. And at Silverstone and Budapest, he earned his place,” stated Vowles. “This weekend, I needed more from him, but I’m not going to make decisions based on individual races.”
“What I do not want is to sit here and claim that Logan permanently has a secured spot in this scenario. He needs to earn it, just as I need to earn my position, and as Alex needs to earn his at the same time.”
Vowles was impressed by the overtaking move Antonelli made this weekend at the bottom of Raidillon de l’Eau Rouge on Franco Colapinto. This does not alter Vowles’ intention to maintain his current pairing with Sargeant and Alex Albon until the end of the year.
“I’m going to share something quite private, but I hope Toto doesn’t mind. We exchanged messages during the F2 race on Saturday. And for me, what Kimi did was really impressive.”
“It was against Colapinto, our own driver. He went on the inside and didn’t lift his foot. And for anyone who has been in a racing car, you know how challenging that overtake was. In the wet, it’s not just about bravery, it’s also about skill.”
“And he had some snap oversteer at the top of Eau Rouge. It’s impressive. He’s a good lad, but he is only 17. And to answer your question, I will be proud of whatever he achieves, because I have been part of his journey up to these last few years. But I am not sure that his trajectory will align with that of Williams.”
