Christian Horner confirmed tonight that Sergio Perez will continue racing for Red Bull throughout the season.
Amid swirling rumours that Sergio Perez might lose his seat at Red Bull during the summer break, team director Christian Horner has confirmed this evening that this will not be the case.
Following a protracted evaluation meeting in Milton Keynes, the white smoke has already emerged and the Mexican can breathe a sigh of relief: he will retain his seat.
Horner, in a statement addressed to Red Bull staff in Milton Keynes, declared: “Checo remains a Red Bull Racing driver, despite all the recent speculation.”
“We look forward to seeing him perform on circuits where he has previously excelled, after the summer break.”
Despite signing a new multi-year contract before the Canadian Grand Prix, Perez had not managed to avoid a concerning dip in form, with Red Bull also applying pressure on the Mexican, as McLaren threatened to snatch the World Constructors’ Championship title from them.
Crossing the finish line in 8th place at the Belgian Grand Prix, having started 2nd, he provoked the ire of Red Bull’s senior advisor Dr. Helmut Marko, who met with Horner this Monday to discuss Perez’s future.
Thus, the Mexican is reassured of his place for now. However, it is worth noting that in 2019, Pierre Gasly was officially confirmed by Red Bull for the second part of the season. A few days later, the team reversed their decision and promoted Alex Albon, while the Frenchman returned to Toro Rosso for the latter half of the year.
There has been no news yet concerning Daniel Ricciardo, but this may await the outcome of the test against Liam Lawson this Wednesday in Imola.
