Carlos Sainz Joins Forces with Albon at Williams

Official : Sainz Signs with Williams F1 Until 2025

29/07/2024

Carlos Sainz will race for Williams F1 alongside Albon from 2025, the team has confirmed.

The rumour mill had been churning in recent days, as we previously reported, and it is now official: Carlos Sainz will join Williams F1 from next year. The Spanish driver has committed to at least two years with the British team. His contract, like that of Alex Albon, is scalable and may be extended.

Sainz had been in talks with Alpine and Audi, as well as Williams, with discussions stretching back several months. The team has a brand-new project under the leadership of James Vowles, who is now the new figurehead of Williams, and the engine supply deal with Mercedes is undoubtedly a compelling argument at the dawn of a new hybrid era.

Carlos Sainz lost his seat at Ferrari earlier this year when Lewis Hamilton was announced, and since then he has been a key player in the transfer market chessboard. With his place confirmed alongside Albon, the rest of the puzzle is expected to quickly fall into place for Sauber and Alpine.

Sainz will continue to use number 55 and will thus replace Logan Sargeant, whose insufficient performances have led to his replacement next year. The new driver will officially start on January 1st, but negotiations are underway for an early release, with potentially crucial tests in Abu Dhabi.

“I am very pleased to announce that I will be joining Williams Racing from 2025,” said Sainz. “It is no secret that this year’s driver market has been exceptionally complex for various reasons and that it took me some time to announce my decision.”

“I am extremely proud to be joining such a historic and successful team, where many of my childhood heroes have raced in the past and left their mark on our sport. The ultimate goal of bringing Williams back to where it belongs, at the front of the grid, is a challenge I embrace with enthusiasm and positivity.”

“I am convinced that this team has all the necessary ingredients to make history again, and from January 1st, I will give my all to help advance Williams alongside every team member.”

“I would like to thank James Vowles and the entire board of Williams for their trust and determination. Their strong leadership and beliefs have played a significant role in my decision.”

“I sincerely believe that the heart of any successful team lies in its personnel and culture. Williams is synonymous with heritage and pure racing; the foundations of the project that lies ahead are very solid, and I am truly looking forward to being a part of it from next year.”
