Alonso's 9th Place Finish May Rise to 8th

Aston Martin Clinches Points with Savvy Strategy

28/07/2024

Aston Martin F1’s tactical one-stop strategy pays off, potentially boosting Alonso from 9th to 8th place.

Fernando Alonso finished 9th at the Belgian Grand Prix, a position that could improve to 8th if George Russell is indeed disqualified for not meeting the minimum weight requirement.

The Aston Martin F1 driver expressed satisfaction with his performance, saying, “I’m pleased with my ninth place today and my two points (possibly four) after a highly competitive race.”

“We had planned several different strategies today. We extended the first stint on medium tyres and then, with the hard tyres, we managed the pace well and experienced decent tyre degradation.”

“We thought there might be a chance of a safety car intervention and, as it wasn’t the case, we decided why not extend and keep to a one-stop strategy. This decision paid off and we succeeded in scoring points.”

“I’m looking forward to a short break and some time to recharge my batteries. We will continue to fight and we still have work to do to make progress for the second half of the season.”

Lance Stroll, finishing 12th, cannot hope for points on a technicality since he was overtaken by Daniel Ricciardo for the 11th place in the closing moments of the race.

“It became clear during the race that tyre degradation was less significant than expected, so we opted for a one-stop strategy.”

“We were in tenth place a few laps from the end of the race, but by that point, I was struggling with the tyres and didn’t have the speed necessary to maintain my position.”

“We didn’t have the pace needed to fight for more today. As a team, I think we still have a lot of work to do to get back into the top four.”
