Leclerc secures an unexpected pole in Belgium, surpassing his own expectations and setting up a promising race day for Ferrari.
Charles Leclerc did not anticipate clinching the pole position at the Belgian Grand Prix. Initially second to Max Verstappen, the Ferrari driver inherited pole following Verstappen’s penalty and confessed he did not expect to set such a strong lap time, mirroring last year’s front row with Sergio Pérez.
“Just like last year! It’s great, I really didn’t expect this over the weekend. With the tricky conditions, we managed a result beyond our expectations. It’s a good thing for the team, and we’ll see what we can do tomorrow once the rain has cleared,” Leclerc stated, believing that dry conditions will prove more challenging.
“I think without the rain, we might have been fighting for fifth place, especially against Mercedes. With the rain, it went better but I’m not complaining. I’m very pleased, very happy with my lap in Q3. It’s good to be back at the front of the grid and we’ll need to capitalize on that tomorrow.”
The Monegasque acknowledges that the long run down to Eau Rouge and the following Kemmel Straight will leave him vulnerable to challengers: “It’s not the easiest lead to hold onto here, but I’ll see. I’ll do my best and try to maintain this lead.”
