Williams F1 Surpasses Expectations in Hungary’s Heat

19/07/2024

Under Hungary’s intense heat, Williams F1 impresses, surpassing initial expectations with a strong showing.

Sven Smeets, Sporting Director at Williams F1, has praised the team’s productive day in Hungary during the Free Practice sessions 1 and 2.

“Today, we tested some lessons from Barcelona. We had a packed schedule and made some progress between FP1 and FP2, and we find ourselves in a better position now than a few weeks ago under these hot track conditions. There’s still a lot of data to analyse tonight, but our race pace seems to have improved. It’s going to be very hot on Sunday, so good tyre management will be crucial to compete for points,” he noted.

Alex Albon expressed his satisfaction with today’s sessions, saying, “There is certainly work to be done as we experimented quite a bit between sessions 1 and 2. We now need to review the data and determine which elements worked and eliminate those that didn’t.”

“The car has more potential, but I’d be surprised if we stay where we are, though it’s a positive start. Our pace on long runs looks good and we still have much to learn from the data, so we’ll be working on that tonight.”

Meanwhile, Logan Sargeant reflected, “I think the most important thing is that we made a good step forward between FP1 and FP2.”

“I wasn’t very happy with our position in FP1, but the afternoon session went much better. We just need to continue to progress, do our homework, and see what we can improve on.”

“The important factor is the track temperature. Tomorrow, it looks like the sky will be a bit more overcast than today, which could work in our favour. I’m sure Sunday will be challenging for the tyres, but we’ll put ourselves in the best position possible. Given the track, I thought we would be in a worse position than we are, so I’m looking forward to a positive day tomorrow.”
