Perez Silent on Red Bull Clause, Stays Firm

18/07/2024

Despite swirling rumors, Sergio Perez remains tight-lipped about the performance clause in his Red Bull contract.

In Hungary today, Sergio Perez vowed to rebound from his recent dip in results, while remaining tight-lipped about rumors that his contract with Red Bull in Formula 1 includes specific performance clauses, revealed by Dr. Marko.

Perez’s drop in competitiveness has sparked rumors that his current 137-point gap from his teammate could trigger a clause at the summer break.

Asked about the validity of rumors regarding his latest contract, Perez replied, “I have nothing to say about that. Obviously, I cannot discuss my contract.”

“What I said at Silverstone did not refer to my contract, when I stated that the next two races are important for me, I meant that I want to go on vacation with a good mindset and I think it’s good for my side of the garage to leave with a good mindset.”

“I was not talking about anything else. I am totally focused on performing well. I will be here after the break and here next year, and it’s no different. I am just totally committed to myself and the team for that.”

“It’s obvious, I am the first to be dissatisfied with the recent races and results, and my main goal is to return to our usual form.”

Perez does not impose more responsibility on himself for the two races preceding the break as Hungary and Belgium could be crucial.

“Again, no! These two races give the same number of points and we need these points by the end of the year, so it changes nothing for me.”

Perez denied that he would be seeking assurances from Red Bull boss Christian Horner and advisor Helmut Marko, who have stated that an evaluation would take place this summer.

“I renewed my contract not long ago. I don’t think it’s relevant, for us, for the team. What’s relevant is that we focus on the track, we focus in the factory, we focus on things we can control. The rest is just outside noise, that’s how it works.”

The six-time winner in F1 also refuted the idea that the increased pressure of being a Red Bull driver is behind his recent disappointing results.

“It’s tough to block out the external noise, it’s true. But at the end of the day, I’m here to give my best, to put in maximum effort, and whether I’m here, at home training, or at home in the simulator, I focus on what’s important.”

“Ultimately, the noise is much louder when you’re with Red Bull. But that’s the beauty of this challenge. That’s why I decided to sign and extend my contract with this team because I love the challenge.”

“It’s really tough but it demands absolutely everything, and that’s why I wanted to continue here.”

Does he deny any pressure from his bosses? They have been quite firm in the media after Silverstone.

“The team is demanding but also very focused. The preparation at the factory with my engineer and others has been good. We are very focused, knowing the season is long. The most important thing is that things can change very quickly. I’ve been on the grid for a long time and I know that if my next weekends are good, my season will look different. I focus on what I can change, the rest is out of my control.”

Reflecting on the challenges that have marked his season, Perez believes several situations have contributed to a “vicious cycle.”

“I haven’t been performing, first of all, at 100% in circumstances where you find yourself in difficult situations. I take a lot of responsibility for that. There have obviously been many circumstances as well with different types of races, so I think it’s a bit of everything when you’re in this vicious cycle.”

“We had a very strong Friday, but I missed qualifying at Silverstone. Then, with the strategy at Silverstone, we just rolled the dice and saw what happened and it didn’t work out for us.”

“The main thing is I’ve been in this business for a very long time and I know that only the result in Abu Dhabi will count. So, let’s ride out the roller coaster and hope to get back in form very soon.”

Asked about whether he deserves the seat next to Verstappen, Yuki Tsunoda responded with a resounding “yes” at the Hungaroring.

Perez responded coolly to that…

“I think a lot of drivers would love to have my seat, it’s obvious. It’s one of the most coveted seats and it’s natural for Yuki to want to progress. I think it’s perfectly normal that when you’re in a lower seat you want to move up. That’s part of the nature of the sport. I have nothing against it. I think it’s good to have big ambitions in the sport.”
