Wolff jests that Mercedes’ enhanced W15 could sway Verstappen as it shows formidable form.
He won’t pass up the opportunity! Given Mercedes F1’s exceptional resurgence, having won the last two F1 Grands Prix, Toto Wolff suggested such performances might persuade Max Verstappen to sign with his team next year…
Toto Wolff made these latest remarks in a tone of jest or irony, but one can’t help but think there’s a hint of seriousness and politics behind it!
As a reminder, Toto Wolff is still deliberating between Carlos Sainz and Andrea Kimi Antonelli for next year… And has thus not ruled out the Max Verstappen option.
Could the Grand Prix at Silverstone reshuffle the cards for Max Verstappen, according to Toto Wolff?
“I don’t know, Max has had plenty of chances to watch the back of our car during the race,” he smiled.
“I don’t think… it does not affect our way of thinking.”
“I’ve always said that we need a fast car and, when we have a fast car, we become interesting for many drivers.”
“But, in a way, we must stay calm and continue the season, keep focusing on the car and then see if the options remain the same.”
“But it’s not as if, you know, everything is absolutely overturned.”
Has the W15 become the best F1 car on the grid?
Since receiving a new wing in Monaco, and thanks to other parts, the W15 has become “driver-friendly” again, to use James Allison, the technical director’s words.
Toto Wolff confirms: the W15 is no longer a diva, it’s now a winning car!
“The breakthrough happened, and suddenly everything that made no sense made sense.”
“The direction of development, or the results from the direction of development, are like the good old days, we find performance, we put it on the car, and it translates into lap time. That wasn’t the case these past two years.”
And Toto Wolff confirms that Mercedes F1 will continue to bring developments to each Grand Prix, starting next at the Hungaroring.
“We didn’t expect to win at Silverstone. But it shows we’re moving in the right direction. There’s more to come in terms of performance that we’re bringing, we’re bringing items to Budapest and Spa.”
“But on the other hand, we shouldn’t get carried away. We won last week by capitalizing on an accident, but at Silverstone, we won fair and square. We had the true pace, we had George and Lewis leading and, in almost all conditions, we had the true pace, we were there.”
