Pierre Gasly will face a grid penalty at Silverstone due to new engine components. This adds to his challenges ahead of the British Grand Prix.
Two bad news items for Pierre Gasly even before the weekend starts at Silverstone for the British Grand Prix: the Frenchman will have to give up his car in Free Practice 1 to Jack Doohan and, more importantly, he will start with a significant penalty (at least 10 places on the grid).
The Alpine F1 driver explains: “My weekend will start in Free Practice 2 as we are giving the first session to Jack Doohan. We are changing power unit components on my car, which will result in a penalty for the Grand Prix. This is a logical solution to guarantee Jack one of his mandatory appearances as a young driver.”
“Despite this, I am eager to get his feedback after Free Practice 1 before getting into the action. I hope we can still deliver a strong performance despite the penalty.”
Gasly indeed comes off another strong performance in Austria with a top 10 finish, barely secured. But he admits he expected more.
“Despite our fourth consecutive points finish, we had a mixed weekend in Austria. We pushed very hard and eventually had to settle for tenth place. I think we could have done better, and we will continue to aim for excellence in all areas to ensure this happens in the future. The race was fun, with nice battles and wheel-to-wheel duels. I made some good overtakes but couldn’t get past Daniel [Ricciardo], and the final result was the tenth-place point, my 400th in Formula 1. It’s a nice milestone, but I hope there are many more to come, starting this week.”
So, on to Silverstone and the adrenaline that accompanies this track.
“From a driver’s perspective, Silverstone is one of the best circuits on the calendar for pure sensations. It’s extremely fast, the car is pushed to its limits in some corners, and it’s so much fun to drive. The races are generally exciting as there are several places where overtaking is possible.”
