Elkann: Strategic Patience in Ferrari’s Newey Deal

02/07/2024

Ferrari’s cautious approach to hiring Adrian Newey aligns with strategic intentions, explains John Elkann.

Ferrari is “cautious” regarding the potential recruitment of Adrian Newey, who could join the Maranello team in 2025.

This is the message conveyed by Ferrari President John Elkann in a new interview with Corriere della Sera, amid rumours that Red Bull’s technical guru might actually end up at Aston Martin F1.

It is widely acknowledged that Newey, 65, has already extensively discussed with Ferrari, but the British engineer is also linked to Aston Martin or even a return to McLaren.

When Elkann was questioned about the rumours, he suggested that a final agreement had not yet been reached.

“There are many evaluations and one must be cautious. It is necessary to find the right time to do things like this, as happened with Lewis Hamilton.”

“With Lewis, there was a convergence of intention that allowed us to work together. Therefore, there are many possibilities, Newey or others, but it is necessary to carefully assess if the conditions are met.”

“We need to understand the level of motivation and the ability to create new things rather than copying others.”
