Verstappen to Discuss Race Incident with Norris

30/06/2024

Verstappen commits to discussing the recent race clash with Norris, promising a thorough review of the incident.

Max Verstappen was unequivocally blamed by Lando Norris, and the FIA, for their collision at the front of the race in Austria.

The Dutchman fared better than the McLaren driver, his puncture enabling him to finish the race in 5th place (despite a 10-second penalty) while the Brit had to retire due to the damage sustained.

Norris vociferously complained about Verstappen’s manoeuvres on the radio. Twice… and on the third occasion, they collided. What does Verstappen say?

“Of course, from the outside, it’s hard to see how I brake. Now, I always move my wheel before I brake and then I brake in a straight line.”

“I think the driver of the car knows better than anyone else. Everyone can have their own opinion, from the outside, it’s easier to judge what’s happening.”

Was he as desperate as Norris claims?

“His dive bombs, he’s so late on the brakes, I think it’s the shape of the turn that sometimes causes these issues. That’s just how it is. It’s never nice when it happens.”

“I need to look back at why and how we touched, of course, we’ll talk about it, it’s just what happens. I’ve had many battles in my career. The incident is one of the consequences of the things we’ve done wrong, whether it’s strategy or pit stops.”

“The car was strange, the first stint wasn’t bad, but it got worse and worse. We need to examine the car.”

Doesn’t he feel responsible? The FIA penalised him and also added 2 points to his licence.

“We’ll discuss it with Lando, I need to review the footage. For now, I think it’s not the right time. It’s better to let things settle down, ideally. But right now I’m more annoyed by our car and our mistakes in the race. Without that, none of this would have happened.”

Christian Horner, team principal of Red Bull, adds: “It seemed there was enough space for Lando. He had already committed a violation with the four track limits exceeded, but it’s one of those things. We will bounce back next weekend.”

“You have tough drivers and I think Lando was throwing his elbows out, and there had already been contact between them before, but in the end, it cost them both dearly.”

“I thought the penalty was harsh for Max, sometimes that’s just racing.”
