Vasseur Confident: Ferrari Set for Spain Comeback

20/06/2024

Ferrari aims for a strong comeback in Spain as Vasseur expresses confidence and Sainz prepares for an emotional final home GP.

Ferrari, despite an encouraging season start, faltered at the last Canadian Grand Prix: no red cars finished, and the team left Montreal with zero points.

This weekend in Barcelona, it’s time to reset the clocks and prevent the gap from widening in both championships.

For Carlos Sainz, this Spanish Grand Prix is even more special as it marks his last in the red uniform.

But is racing at home a source of pressure rather than passion? Not according to Sainz himself.

“It’s definitely one of the most special moments of the year for me! Being able to race in front of your home crowd is a privilege and I’m very excited for the upcoming weekend. The track is constantly buzzing with thousands of Spanish fans and the support I receive is very special. I also have a special grandstand, the CS55 Grada, full of superb tifosi! It has become a beautiful tradition and I simply love passing by and feeling the atmosphere here.”

The Barcelona Circuit has been redesigned, with a faster third sector. This increases the physical challenge of this circuit, notes Carlos Sainz.

“It’s a track with a lot of character and we drivers (at least most of us!) know it very well because of the amount of testing we have done here in the past.”

“Turns 1, 2, and 3 are a beautiful combination with medium to high-speed corners. In these corners, your neck is really tested! Turn 9 is also ultra-fast and a bit blind as it’s uphill. It’s important to take care of your tyres in the first part of the lap if you want to make the most of Sector 3 and put in a competitive lap in qualifying.”

Frédéric Vasseur calls for calm at Ferrari after the Montreal debacle

For Frédéric Vasseur, the team director, it’s crucial to ensure that the lessons from the Montreal debacle have been well learned.

Scuderia must neither panic nor be discouraged. There will be highs, there will be lows, the key is for Ferrari to remain steady and focused. That’s essentially what Frédéric Vasseur is saying.

“The Spanish Grand Prix should see us returning to competitiveness, with the same level of performance we have shown throughout the season before the Canadian Grand Prix. In fact, we arrive in Barcelona encouraged by the fantastic performances of our Ferrari colleagues in Hypercar, who have just won the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the second consecutive year.”

“We have learned valuable lessons from the Montreal weekend and believe we have now made progress. We need to work calmly and continue to focus on ourselves. The Barcelona circuit has always been considered a great test for the overall performance of a car and we hope to regain our usual form here.”

“Throughout the season, we have seen qualifications and races fought to the hundredth of a second, so it will be crucial for us to ensure that everything is done correctly, down to the smallest details. This will involve being at the top of our game, because only by executing each session perfectly can we achieve the results we know we are capable of.”

“This is Carlos’s home race and I’m sure all that extra support from the fans will be an additional boost for him. It will be an interesting weekend and we aim to score a lot of points.”
