Kevin Magnussen remains in limbo as Haas F1 delays its decision on his 2024 contract, leaving the Danish driver uncertain about his future with the team.
On paper, Nico Hülkenberg’s departure from Haas F1 (to Audi) might seem like good news for Kevin Magnussen. But in reality, the Danish driver’s seat remains highly threatened for next year.
Haas F1 might be tempted to end the Günther Steiner era and completely renew its driver lineup. Everyone is aware of Ollie Bearman’s potential appointment, but Haas F1 might also consider signing Esteban Ocon, who has already announced his departure from Alpine. Valtteri Bottas is also a possible option for Ayao Komatsu.
Is Kevin Magnussen living his last year in F1? Naturally, the Dane must be anxious about his seat and has likely already asked his team principal, Ayao Komatsu, for updates.
So, what has he been told internally about his chances of keeping his seat?
“They told me they’re not in a hurry, and that’s fine – they have control of the situation.”
“I think the market is very open right now and many pieces of the puzzle need to fall into place. Slowly, everything is starting to come together, and I hope our future will be settled soon.”
“Everyone is talking to everyone and checking what options we have. As I said, I hope everyone’s future will be resolved as soon as possible.”
Replacing Kevin Magnussen wouldn’t be illogical: erratic on the track, the Dane is also regularly beaten by Nico Hülkenberg, especially in qualifying.
Does Kevin Magnussen admit he’s not quite up to par this season? Not really…
“It has been a bit difficult this year to get the small things right… I’ve been knocked out in Q1 too often due to bad timing with traffic and other things like that.”
“I don’t want to downplay everything, but in hindsight, it’s hard to see what we should have done differently because cars come out on track at odd times. We don’t even have enough time to start a new lap – and you can’t foresee that.”
“You just have to not dwell on it and move forward, keep a cool head, and hope for better moments.”
