Williams F1 Unmoved on Antonelli for 2024

Antonelli’s 2024 Williams F1 Seat: A No-Go?

18/06/2024

Despite speculation, Williams F1 currently dismisses any plans to replace Sargeant with Antonelli for 2024.

Could Andrea Kimi Antonelli Finish the Season at Williams F1? The young Italian is widely tipped to replace Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes in 2025, but Antonelli’s manager, Toto Wolff, is keen to give him some tangible F1 experience beforehand.

Williams’ team principal, James Vowles, recently acknowledged in Canada that Sargeant’s position was not secure: “We really need more from him, to be able to save his seat in such circumstances.”

Given the FIA’s new stance on 17-year-olds, immediate outings in free practice sessions for Antonelli are now possible, and Günther Steiner believes that Williams could capitalize on this to promote him.

“I think he will have to leave at the end of the year,” declared the Sky Germany consultant on the Red Flags podcast, adding that Williams would certainly try everything to advance Sargeant before making a radical decision.

“Above all, we try to work with the people we have. Of course, at some point, enough is enough and people wonder why they put themselves through this. If he has a few more races before the summer break, like the one in Canada, it might be that another driver will be in his cockpit after the break.”

Williams seems keen to keep Sargeant as long as possible, as he brings sponsors. However, if Mercedes offers a discount on the engine bill to place Antonelli, it’s possible that the Grove-based team might agree.
