‘Exhausted Yet Driven: Schumacher’s F1 Battle’

15/06/2024

Schumacher reveals the personal cost of his relentless pursuit to return to Formula 1, amid emotional highs and lows.

Mick Schumacher is resolute in his determination to return to Formula 1, whatever it takes. The former Haas F1 driver, now competing in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) with Alpine, believes he has transformed completely and acknowledges the struggle to make a comeback in the premier category is taxing for him.

“Fighting to return is exhausting,” Schumacher told The Independent. “It’s like being shown a delicious cake that you’re not allowed to eat while watching everyone else enjoy it.”

“It’s tough, certainly, but I know why I’m doing it. Frankly, who I was two years ago bears no resemblance to who I am today. F1 has been a dream since I was five, and I’m not ready to give it up, am I?”

“Sometimes you feel like you have a chance, and then it never materializes because something else happens. These past few years have been an emotional and exhausting rollercoaster. But I am clawing my way back up.”

His name has been mentioned as a potential replacement for Esteban Ocon at Alpine F1 next year, but it seems Jack Doohan may be the frontrunner. The German admits he might need to take proactive steps to secure a spot in the elite: “Maybe I’ll start drafting my CV and send it out to people!”

“It’s never been a secret that my goal is to return to the grid. I’ve demonstrated in various ways that I’m capable of winning championships. The question is just whether it fits into someone’s schedule, into their plan.”

Besides his ambition to return to Formula 1, Schumacher is also keen to prove his critics wrong, including his former boss Günther Steiner: “There are many aspects of my driving that haven’t yet been seen. I understand how I could have improved, and I still have a lot to show.”

“The question is, what do you want in your team at the moment? Do you want someone around whom you can build a team? Good for marketing? Someone who just drives and stays quiet? There are so many different types of drivers.”

“As for me, I’m truly hungry. I just need to keep performing in WEC, to show everyone what I can do. People will then know what they’re getting if they sign me, and I hope to prove to everyone that they made the wrong decision in not keeping me.”
