Introduction: Haas F1 eyes a strong performance at the Canadian Grand Prix, with their VF-24 car well-suited for Montreal’s unique circuit, aiming to turn potential into points.
Haas F1 aims to consolidate their seventh place in the Constructors’ Championship as Formula 1 heads into the ninth round of its 2024 season. The Canadian Grand Prix could favour the VF-24, and confidence is high to move past a disastrous Monaco GP.
“Montreal is a unique circuit, a street track with many low-speed corners, changes of direction, and it is unforgiving of mistakes,” said Ayao Komatsu, the American team’s director.
“The downforce level is lower than on some other tracks, so combining that with the characteristics of the VF-24, it is beneficial that there are no high-speed corners. At low speeds, the car’s balance is crucial, and we must achieve that.”
“In terms of downforce level, we have been more competitive on low-downforce circuits since the start of the year compared to high-downforce tracks, due to the efficiency of our car, so this is another positive point.”
“The main takeaway is that Montreal is quite a specific circuit with its layout and downforce level, heavy braking demands, low speed, and direction changes. But that said, with what we have seen over the past eight races with the robustness of the car, I believe we can fight for points.”
Drivers seek success
Nico Hülkenberg is eager to race in Montreal, a circuit he enjoys for both its layout and atmosphere. Last year, he set the second-fastest time in qualifying and hopes for another strong performance this season: “I love Montreal, it’s probably my favourite circuit on the calendar.”
“I like its location on the small island, the morning arrival at the circuit, and the atmosphere in Montreal. I return every year and truly enjoy being here. The circuit is very fluid, even though it’s flat – no elevation changes – but the track’s rhythm is unique and suits me perfectly.”
“Last year was very positive, especially on Saturday, but on Sunday, we weren’t competitive and dropped back. I’m excited to hit the track, and this year, we are in a much better position and should be able to turn a good qualifying into a race result.”
Kevin Magnussen appreciates the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve and hopes to shine there: “Montreal is another great circuit and a classic, even if it doesn’t have the history of Monaco or Monza, for example. It’s also a drivers’ circuit, with kerb riding and late braking into chicanes.”
“The races there are excellent, with good overtaking opportunities, and overall, it’s a great place to go. The city is fantastic, the food, the hotels, and the fans – I have nothing bad to say! I don’t think I’ve had a fantastic weekend there yet, so I plan to do so this season.”
