Jock Clear praises Fred Vasseur’s leadership at Ferrari, crediting his guidance for the team’s recent willingness to take risks and their subsequent progress.
Jock Clear (pictured right, below) is Ferrari’s most renowned performance engineer, having been in F1 for several decades and worked with numerous world champions. He admits to being impressed by Ferrari’s progress in recent months and commends Fred Vasseur’s work since his arrival at the beginning of 2023.
“I honestly think it’s a testament to what Fred is doing. You know, it’s leadership that gives people the confidence to make riskier decisions and, frankly, that’s Fred’s strength,” Clear stated.
“If he says it’s the way to go, that’s fine as long as he facilitates it, and that’s exactly what he does. If Fred says it’s the right approach, it’s good, provided he facilitates it, which he absolutely does. If it doesn’t work out, we will still have learned something, if you see what I mean, and he gives people the confidence to proceed.”
“I think it’s been evident since Fred’s arrival that people appreciate this. They’re not afraid to try new things, instead of worrying ‘oh my god, I’ll be solely blamed for this’. The fact is, people now consider that we can learn much faster if we take risks.”
“I believe that if we all keep pushing, Red Bull is pushing at the same pace as us, but the difference is that Red Bull doesn’t have to take risks. They probably think it’s not good to take risks because of where they are. It’s this risk factor that will make the difference between Red Bull and the other teams trying to catch up.”
However, Clear also acknowledges Red Bull’s efforts: “We have to recognise the work Red Bull is doing and tip our hats to them, but the gap behind them is closing.”
“You know, there are three or four teams that are very close, and I think it’s the natural result of only two years of development. If this aerodynamic package continued for another 10 years, we’d all be very close by the end; it’s a natural outcome. But for now, there are still opportunities.”
“It’s not as if we’ve resigned ourselves to things getting closer and closer; there are still opportunities. You know, the cars are not so well defined now that there aren’t areas where you think, ‘oh yes, if we can get this to work, it could be a game-changer’.”
