Mick Schumacher’s Hopes for F1 Return ‘Growing’

28/05/2024

Mick Schumacher’s chances of securing an F1 seat with Alpine in 2025 are increasing, as he competes with Jack Doohan for a coveted spot.

Mick Schumacher sees a clear path for a return to F1 with Alpine, although he is not the only young driver eyeing a seat.

According to multiple sources, it is now certain that Esteban Ocon will not be part of the French team in 2025. The Frenchman and his management (Toto Wolff) were reportedly informed before the collision between the two Alpine drivers on Sunday in Monaco at Portier.

There is at least one seat up for grabs next year, possibly two if Pierre Gasly also pursues another project.

Jack Doohan, the team’s reserve driver, has started an intensive private testing program in F1 with a 2022 A522. The Australian is waiting for his turn and seems to be the favorite.

But Mick Schumacher, also an Alpine driver in WEC and reserve driver for Mercedes F1, is a contender with two years of experience in the top category with Haas F1.

In Monaco, he spoke about his hopes for a return.

“They are clearly growing. Things are moving. My goal and dream is to race in Formula 1. It always has been and always will be.”

“That’s why we need to make sure the dominoes fall in my favor, and I hope to secure a seat.”

“What I can do for that is simply deliver my best performance in WEC for Alpine and also in Formula 1, and continue to perform well for the team as Mercedes’ reserve driver and keep discussions ongoing.”

Bruno Famin remarked that he was impressed by Schumacher’s adaptation to the challenges of WEC, admitting it would be “a mistake” to overlook him for an F1 seat in 2025.

“I am very happy with Mick. He is super fast, but that’s not the main thing. In WEC, you need to race at a high and consistent level and have a good team spirit.”

“I am very impressed with him because he adapted his attitude to endurance from day one. He gets along very well with his teammates.”

“Everything is open for 2025, everyone is talking to everyone. It would be a mistake not to have Mick on the list.”

Team spirit is a core value that Famin holds dear, feeling betrayed by Ocon and his first-lap action in Monaco, which could result in a suspension or disciplinary action for Canada.
