Nico Hülkenberg supports Carlos Sainz joining Audi F1, recalling their time together at Renault and highlighting Audi’s effort to secure top talent.
Audi F1 – Sauber continues its charm offensive to attract Carlos Sainz to the team.
Currently operating under the names “Kick” or “Stake F1,” the Swiss team—already 100% owned by the German automaker—will become Audi’s new works team in Formula 1 starting in 2026.
Nico Hülkenberg has recently committed as a driver for 2025 and beyond, and the team’s representative, Alessandro Alunni Bravi, admitted in Imola that Sainz “is a top-tier driver and a significant target for signing.”
“Let’s just say we are in discussions and Carlos also has top-level options. We don’t want to be a second choice. We want to be ‘the’ choice,” Bravi said (read more here).
Hülkenberg was asked in Imola if he wished for Sainz, 29, to complete the Sauber-Audi driver lineup for 2025 and beyond.
“I have a lot of respect for Carlos,” the German replied. “He’s an incredible driver.”
“We were already teammates at Renault in 2018, and I enjoyed sharing that adventure with him.”
Hülkenberg confirmed that Sainz is also in discussions with established top teams like Mercedes and Red Bull. However, Mercedes F1 seems ready to pass on the opportunity to sign the Spaniard (read more here).
“As a driver, you want to choose the best sporting option. Personally, I would love for him to join Audi. But I understand he may want to win sooner with Mercedes or Red Bull.”
More generally, Hülkenberg stated he has never been happier in Formula 1, although he is slightly concerned about the announcement that the sport is considering making every Grand Prix a sprint event starting in 2025.
“We currently have six Grands Prix with sprints, if I’m not mistaken, and I think that’s a good balance.”
“We need to protect the traditional format to preserve the sport’s true DNA. I think the calendar is already well-structured, with plenty of breaks – for us, having a weekend off is like a holiday.”
“I consider myself an expert in relaxation. I enjoy both racing and my downtime.”
