Adrian Newey’s potential return to F1 has top teams like Ferrari and Williams vying for his expertise, with fans and insiders eagerly anticipating his decision.
Formula 1 eagerly awaits Adrian Newey’s next move.
The 65-year-old, arguably the most famous and sought-after designer in F1 history, has stepped back from Red Bull and taken a break because he is “tired.”
Yesterday, he promised a return to F1 for at least another 4 or 5 years. It remains to be seen whether this break, which started with the announcement of his departure from Red Bull, will last until April 1, 2025… or beyond.
Newey is already linked to potential moves to Ferrari, Aston Martin – and even Mercedes or Williams.
“I respect him immensely,” said Williams team principal James Vowles in Imola, after admitting two weeks ago in Miami that he had discussed with Newey a potential return to the Grove-based team.
“He has a history with Williams. And I wanted, first and foremost, to ensure I had an initial conversation with him to signal our interest. I explained to him that Williams was once again the ideal place for him. I think we need to be honest. I want to make sure we talk to him, I want to ensure our name is in his hat when he makes his choice.”
“We have paused discussions for now because he is not in a hurry. Or maybe he has already chosen and isn’t saying. There are obviously bigger teams that want him.”
Ferrari team principal Frédéric Vasseur has been more reluctant to publicly admit the Maranello team’s interest in Newey, but Lewis Hamilton stated in Miami that he would “love” to work with his fellow Brit once he dons red in 2025 and beyond.
And now, in Imola, Charles Leclerc was also asked about the rumors linking Newey to Ferrari. The Daily Mail even reports that the deal is done, or the contract is signed!
“Everyone in the paddock wants someone like Adrian,” admitted the Ferrari driver. “Having him with us would be a valuable addition, an opportunity.”
“Now, we’ll see if we can get him or not.”
However, he agrees with Vasseur that Ferrari is already climbing back to the top of Formula 1 without Newey.
“As a team, we are the ones who have improved the most over the past seven or eight months. But yes, Adrian is one of those engineers you’d like to work with at some point in your career.”
“We know each other, we talk, so far we haven’t gone into details because he was with Red Bull, but in the future, we’ll see if we can work together.”
Red Bull consultant Dr. Helmut Marko initially stated after Miami that he saw Newey in “green” for his eventual return to F1 – but changed his prediction to “red” a few days later.
Fernando Alonso already wears Aston Martin green, and he commented on the Newey rumors in Imola: “I’ve always wanted to work with him.”
“I think he is one of the best that Formula 1 has ever had, a true legend of the sport. I have always expressed my admiration for him.”
“We’ll see what he does in the future.”
