McLaren’s F1 Sprint hopes in Miami were dashed by errors from Piastri and Norris.

McLaren F1 likely missed out on an outstanding outcome during the Sprint qualifying in Miami. Oscar Piastri qualified sixth and acknowledged a mishap on his fast lap, expressing surprise he didn’t finish further back given his dissatisfaction with his time.

“It’s not bad, but my lap was quite horrible, and I finished sixth. So, I think everyone must have had a bad run,” said the Australian. “I believe Lando had the fastest lap in SQ2, so it’s a bit strange, but I’ll happily take the sixth position.”

“I think it’s going to be tough for everyone in the races, but the tires seem to be holding up well; they’re just very hot. I’m not too worried, but it could be an exciting Sprint. A few cars are out of place. There hasn’t been much consistency, so it will be exciting tomorrow.”

Indeed, Lando Norris was the fastest in SQ1 and SQ2, and his time in the second part of qualifying could have secured him the pole in SQ3, but he too made a mistake, lamenting a rush that cost him dearly as he will start ninth.

“I just pushed too hard. The car was performing very well. It’s simply foolish, to be honest,” lamented the Briton. “A few errors in the first sector and it was a big downward spiral from there.”

“It’s a pity because the team did a good job. The improvements are working. I’m happy with everything. The pace is very good. I was probably one of the fastest. I’m disappointed with today but I’ll do my best tomorrow.”
