Amidst rumors, George Russell supports Max Verstappen’s potential transfer to Mercedes F1, advocating for top-level competition.

George Russell would have no issue welcoming Max Verstappen to Mercedes F1, amid increasingly persistent rumors about the triple world champion’s potential move to Brackley. The British driver, who has been competing against Lewis Hamilton since 2022, believes he needs to measure himself against the best in the sport.

“I would be totally for it! Joining Mercedes in 2022, I came after Lewis’s legendary years and victories, and it was a big task for anyone to step into the shoes he had filled for so long,” stated Russell.

“I believe in myself; we must compete against the best in the same car and show what you’re worth. I’ve had Lewis as a teammate for the past three years; he’s an incredible teammate, an incredible driver, and we push each other to the limit every week. I would welcome Max; I want to compete against the best and prove what I am capable of. Make it happen!”

Asked about the possibility of Andrea Kimi Antonelli taking Hamilton’s place in 2025, should Verstappen not join, Russell is supportive of the young Italian and thinks it’s only a matter of time before he joins the team.

“I’ve heard he’s doing well. But it’s tough when you’re learning to have a good benchmark. However, he’s gaining experience and there’s no doubt he’ll be in a Mercedes in the future, whether next year or in the years to come.”

“Time will tell, but he’s a very talented driver, he’s won everything in his junior formula years, so there’s no reason not to see him in Formula 1 competing against the best in the coming years.”
