Red Bull confirms Adrian Newey’s departure in early 2025 after a transformative 19-year tenure with the team.
It’s now confirmed, and fittingly on May 1st: Adrian Newey will depart Red Bull in 2025 after 19 years. His exact departure will be during the first quarter of 2025.
Red Bull Racing has just announced this long-anticipated news, with the team’s CEO, Christian Horner, praising his contribution as a “true F1 legend.”
Newey has immediately stepped down from his design role at Red Bull Racing and will continue to attend specific races to support the team on track until the end of the 2024 season. This swift withdrawal from the design role is surely meant to shorten his notice period for starting with another team (Ferrari) in 2025, after the first quarter in any case.
He will focus on the final development and delivery of Red Bull’s first hypercar, the much-anticipated RB17, which will be unveiled at Goodwood in July.
Since joining Red Bull Racing in 2006, Adrian’s vision and technical leadership have been crucial for the team and group, securing seven notable F1 drivers’ championship titles and six constructors’ championships – amassing 118 wins and 101 poles, including Toro Rosso’s pole and win in 2008.
“Since I was a young boy, I wanted to be a designer of fast cars. My dream was to become a Formula 1 engineer, and I’ve been fortunate to make that dream a reality,” comments Adrian Newey, Chief Technical Officer at Oracle Red Bull Racing.
“For nearly two decades, it has been a great honor for me to have played a key role in the advancement of Red Bull Racing, from a newcomer to a multi-title team. However, I believe the time has come to pass the baton to others and to take on new challenges. Meanwhile, the final stages of development for the RB17 are upon us, so for the rest of my time with the team, I will focus on that.”

It has been a true privilege, and I am confident that the engineering team is well-prepared for the work leading up to the final evolution of the car under this four-year regulatory period.”

Newey thus talks about new challenges: so no question of retirement for him, who should be announced in the coming minutes, hours, or days as a new consultant/technical director for Ferrari.
The other major impact expected is a domino effect with the likely announcement of Max Verstappen’s move to Mercedes F1, facilitated by Dr. Marko’s resignation.
