On March 15, 2016, Audi recruited him, leading to his appointment as the CEO of Lamborghini. Liberty Media, the entity owning Formula 1, selected him to take over from Chase Carey as the new chief beginning January 1, 2021.

Domenicali’s Rise: Ferrari to F1 Leadership Journey

After an early career in Italian business and trade, Stefano Domenicali joined Ferrari in 1991, initially working in the administrative sector. He then transitioned to managing the racing team’s administration and the development unit at the Mugello test circuit.

In 1995, he was appointed head of personnel for Ferrari’s sports department, facilitating team partnerships before his promotion to team manager in December 1996. Following a brief stint as logistics director, he ascended to the position of sporting director in 2002.

In January 2008, Domenicali took on the mantle of Scuderia Ferrari’s director in Formula 1, a role previously held by Jean Todt. In April 2014, after a series of disappointing performances by the Scuderia in the season’s first three Grand Prix, Domenicali resigned, paving the way for Marco Mattiacci, then in charge of Ferrari’s North American operations, to succeed him.

Shortly after the Geneva Motor Show concluded on March 15, 2016, Lamborghini appointed Stefano Domenicali to lead the company, succeeding Stephan Winkelmann.

Announcing his departure on September 25, 2020, Lamborghini confirmed that Domenicali would transition to his new role as the head of Formula 1 starting in 2021.
