IndyCar champion Alex Palou ends Formula 1 ambitions, choosing to stay in IndyCar after his historic Indianapolis 500 victory.
Palou, this season’s Indianapolis 500 winner, has stated that he no longer wishes to move to Formula 1.
At 28, he is widely regarded as the best current IndyCar driver, with titles in 2021, 2023, and 2024. Palou flirted with Formula 1 through a testing contract with McLaren, but a contractual dispute led him to commit fully to IndyCar.
Last Sunday, just hours after the checkered flag in Monaco, he became the first Spanish driver to win the Indianapolis 500.
Palou Turns Down F1
He now openly admits, “F1 doesn’t interest me anymore.”
“I still follow it. It’s a huge series. It’s incredible. I’m a big fan, but I don’t think they’re having as much fun as I am here.”
“I just like driving, having fun, and being with my loved ones, and I think F1 is the complete opposite.”
Palou has often been linked to Cadillac’s brand-new Formula 1 project. He insists that as the interest in him from F1 has faded, so too has his desire to switch disciplines.
“I don’t want to leave now. Even if they tell me: ‘Don’t worry, you can come back in a year or two,’ what if everyone’s at their peak and I never manage to catch up?”
“And I wasn’t thinking about it last year, and I’m not thinking about it this year either. It’s becoming less and less present every day, and with this Indy 500 win, I’ve got that feeling of ‘I want to get another one.’ Not F1.”
