Vasseur: Hamilton Battling 'Too Many Highs and Lows'

Ferrari boss Vasseur opens up on Hamilton’s struggles, as the Brit’s adaptation to life in red hits early turbulence this season.

Early concerns emerge as Hamilton’s Ferrari journey hits turbulence.

Lewis Hamilton’s high-profile move to Ferrari was the talk of the off-season, but just five races into 2025, signs of frustration are already beginning to show.

The seven-time world champion, now in his 40s, has yet to find his groove at Maranello. Tensions seemed to rise in Jeddah, where Hamilton bluntly admitted he wasn’t feeling at home in the car. When asked if he felt comfortable during the race, his answer was short and telling:
“No, not for a second.”

He went on to say he’d be cancelling some personal plans to focus on work:
“I’ve got a work week ahead—no time off. After this race, I need to rethink a few things.”

Most concerning, however, was Hamilton’s comment suggesting the entire season could be painful—a statement that reportedly didn’t sit well with Ferrari crew members at the track.

Team Principal Fred Vasseur has stood by Hamilton, acknowledging that adjusting to a new team and car takes time. But he also hinted at growing concerns after Saudi Arabia.

“It was a tougher weekend for him—he finished 30 seconds behind Charles. He had a solid second stint, but overall he struggled. Dirty air made things worse, and he’s just having too many ups and downs. That applies to the team as well.”

When asked about Hamilton’s bleak outlook on the season, Vasseur responded:
“I haven’t spoken with him about it yet, but it’s true—there are good moments and bad ones. He hasn’t always been that far off the pace, but we’ll have to talk.”

So, what’s going wrong? According to Vasseur, it’s a mix of factors.

“It’s partly about trusting the car—and also regaining confidence in himself. Everything is new here. We need to stay focused, work hard with Lewis, and I’m confident the results will come.”
