Fernando Alonso admits Aston Martin’s struggles are deepening, with poor grip and pace leaving the team far from regular points finishes.
Alonso isn’t sugarcoating it—Aston Martin is in for a challenging year, and scoring points might be a rare achievement unless things change fast.
After a disappointing start to the season, the AMR25 is showing serious issues in both qualifying and race pace. In Bahrain, the team struggled to compete, with Alonso managing only 13th in qualifying and finishing 15th in the race. According to the two-time world champion, that was pretty much the best they could hope for.
“The problems are all over the place,” Alonso admitted. “Low-speed corners are definitely our weakest area. That was obvious in Australia, Japan, China, and even more so here in Bahrain, which is one of the slowest tracks in terms of cornering speed. This weekend has been our least competitive.”
He emphasized that the team is pushing hard behind the scenes, but they need upgrades—and fast.
“We’re doing everything we can, but we’re not happy with the results. We need the planned updates on the car as soon as possible. Only then will we start to understand what kind of season we’re in for.”
One of the main issues is grip and traction, especially in slow corners.
“It’s tricky on corner exit and even mid-corner. The car just feels dead at low speed. It’s a well-known problem we had last year too, and it’s still there now.”
“We need to improve in every area. We knew Bahrain would be tough because of all the slow sections, but it’s not just that—we have to make the car better everywhere.”
Looking ahead, Alonso is hopeful that the high-speed layout of Jeddah might suit them better, but he’s realistic about their chances.
“Scoring points this year will be hard. The top four teams are in a different league right now. Then depending on the track, teams like Haas, Williams, and Racing Bulls are also ahead of us. Even Alpine did a better job this weekend.”
“At the moment, we’re the seventh or eighth best team on the grid. And from those positions, you need a lot of luck to get into the points.”
“We’ll see. We’ll keep trying our best.”
